On arrival at the airport you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to Negombo (8 kms, 15 min). Check in at the hotel in Negombo. In the evening enjoy a Negombo city tour including fish market, Dutch Cannel, a Buddhist Temple and the shopping complex, dinner overnight stay at the hotel.
After breakfast leave for Anuradhapura (185 kms, approx. 5 hour drive), after arrival in Anuradhapura visit the sacred ancient city founded in the 4th century B.C., a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982, Anuradhapura has the largest number of ancient monuments of the great ancient Sinhala civilization which flourished in this region. You will see some of the most famous as well as the tallest dagabas of the Buddhist world, RuwanweliseyaDagaba from the 2nd century B.C. with its famous elephant walls and the 3rd century B.C. ThuparamaDagaba, furthermore visit ruins of ancient royal palaces, especially the pillars of the Brazen Palace, which once had nine storey's, as well as ancient temples and monasteries, the sculpture of the Samadhi Buddha which is one of the finest pieces of Buddhist sculpture, the twin ponds, guard stones and the famous moonstone. Overnight stay at a hotel in Anuradhapura.
After breakfast leave for Sigiriya (65 kms, approx. 1 1/2 hour) and climb the rock fortress built by King Kashshapa in the 5th century A.D., who used it as his Royal Citadel for more than 18 years. The lion rock is of unusual beauty, rising 200 meters from the scrub jungle. See the famous frescoes of the "Heavenly Maidens" of Sigiriya in a sheltered niche of the rock and the 10 feet high so-called mirror wall. Afterwards leave to Polonnaruwa (67 kms, approx. 1 1/2 hour), during the 11th and 12th century the new capital of Sri Lanka, a well-planned medieval city defended by still remaining enclosing walls (around 5 kms long), full of medieval palaces, shrines, monasteries, pavilions, parks, ponds and irrigation lakes. The Vatadage and the Thuparama image houses and the Galvihara temple with its rock-cut Buddha statues are the most spectacular places of interest in Polonnaruwa. Overnight stay at a hotel in Dambulla.
After breakfast leave for Dambulla and visit the famous Golden Rock cave temple. A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries this cave monastery, a vast isolated monad rock, with its five caverns is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The ceiling of one cavern is fully decorated with paintings that follow the natural folds of the rock so closely that it appears to be made of cloth. Afterwards leave for Kandy (72 kms, approx. 3 hour drive), on the way visit a spice garden in Matale, see Kandy, the bustling hill country capital famous for the white painted Temple of the Tooth Relic which houses Sri Lanka’s most venerated religious relic, the Tooth of the Buddha, enjoy the view of the Kandy Lake built in 1807 which is an attractive centrepiece of the town, walk around in the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Kandy is also popular because of the annual festival known as the EsalaPerahera where the inner casket covering the tooth relic of the Buddha is taken in a grand procession through the streets of the city, the Perahera is held annually in the month of July or August. In the evening visit the mentioned Tooth Relic temple when you can join a ceremony, afterwards enjoy the Kandyan Cultural Show featuring the graceful dancers and drummers, the show culminates in an impressive fire walking display. After breakfast proceed to Pinnawala and visit the Elephant Orphanage (50 kms, 1 hour drive). This orphanage was set up by the government to take care of baby elephants lost or abandoned in the wilderness. The baby elephants being bottle fed with milk is a heartwarming sight. Thereafter observe them as they take their daily bath in the nearby river, a marvelous photo opportunity. Bathing is enjoyed by all elephants, young and old alike, and it is a good time to closely observe their tightly knit family structure. The young elephants are protected and cared for by the female elder ones, and the leader of the group is respected by all of them. (Open from 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Daily feeding times: 9.15 a.m., 1.15 p.m. 5.00 p.m. Bathing times: 10.00 a.m., 2.00 p.m., and 4.00 p.m.). Afterwards we leave for Nuwara Eliya (130kms, approx. 4 1/2 hour drive), on the way visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens where a rare collection of tropical flora, exotic as well as indigenous, can be studied, including the famous Orchid House. The beautiful town of Nuwara Eliya is locatedt in the heart of our Tea country, 1890 meters above sea level, so on the way visit a tea plantation and factory, and see waterfalls, dinner &over night stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Before sunrise travel by the jeep to the "World's End" in Horton Plains National Park, we will have a picnic with breakfast packed, afterwards walk around 14 kms to see the diverse nature of the National Park, after returning to Nuwara Eliya in the evening relax in the hotel or in downtown, dinner and overnight stay in the same hotel in Nuwara Eliya.
After breakfast proceed to Yala (197 kms, approx. 4 1/2 hour drive), seetRavana Ella falls, a sight with a scenic backdrop of mountains and valleys. According to the local Ravana mythology Sita bathed in this waterfall during her captivity. On arrival in Yala check in at the hotel, in the afternoon commence a jeep safari in the Yala National Park accompanied by a tracker. Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's premier eco tourist destination, renowned for its variety of wild life, notably for its many elephants and its leopards. It is also home to the spotted deers, sambars, wild buffalos, sloth bears, jackals, mongooses and crocodiles. The peacock, easily observable, is the most famous of the birds in this park. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel near Yala.
After breakfast leave for Hikkaduwa, on the way see stilt fishermen at Weligama, visit Galle's Dutch fortress, with Dutch Museum, Dutch church, etc., check in at the hotel in Hikkaduwa, in the evening relax at Hikkaduwa Beach, dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.
After breakfast leave for Negombo, on the way visit a Sea Turtles farm at Kosgoda, take part in a Colombo sightseeing tour; finally check in at hotel in Negombo, dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.
